There was Counter-Strike but…
Long before Counter-Strike, Quake ruled the World. One popular mod that was played was Action Quake II, where one of the developers from the team of development was noone else than Minh Le… Yes, *THAT* Minh Le from the Counter-Strike development team. Small World, eh? 😉
And yet, when Quake 3 Arena was released, popular mods were focused around improvements of the original game, but there wasn’t any “Counter-Strike” killer. Well, that was until Urban Terror came out, designed to be a mix of Counter-Strike, Action Quake 2, along with a few more twists that only the idTech3 engine knows best. And what’s even more surprising is that the mod is still being developped and played as of today!
There are about 10 gamemodes available, as well as about 34 default maps included (that is quite a lot!) but we will try to limit ourselves to these gamemodes:
- Team Deathmatch
- Bomb Mode
- Capture and Hold
- Gun Game
Installation
Back then, Urban Terror required Quake 3 Arena, but since the sourcecode went GPL, the game can be fully used as a standalone.
You can download the game here: https://www.urbanterror.info/downloads/ . Make sure you’re downloading the full version (that has a size of 1.4 Gb)
Quick Guide
Movement
Like a few games such as Day of Defeat, Urban Terror uses a stamina bar that is seen next to the health bar. It’ll be consumed when jumping, wall-jumping, even when sliding, and will be restored if you’re walking or standing still.
Careful though: the maximum amount of stamina is linked to your health. The less you have health, the less stamina you’ll have. When you have no more stamina, your jumps will be extremely low as well as being heard breathing deeply, forcing you to rest a bit.
If you know how to strafejump in Quake 3 Arena, you can do the same technique to gain speed. What’s even cooler is if you have enough speed, you can crouch to slide for a longer distance than usual!
Damage control
Urban Terror has locational damage. Depending on when you’re hit, you will slowly lose health, be even less accurate, and, in addition to that, if you’re falling from high heights, you will slowdown in your movements. Wound parts of your body will be shown in dark red on your HUD.
If that happens, you will have to use a bandage (Q key by default) in order to “fix” yourself. Depending on how many wounds you have, it will take more or less time to be fully healed. Once these bandages are applied, these parts will be white again.
Weapons
Weapon ammunitions are not working like Counter-Strike ; they are working in clips, meaning that if you reload your weapon while it still has ammo, you will definitely lose these precious bullets. So, you’ll have to reload wisely. Also, your weapon does not automatically reload when your clip is empty ; you will have to do it manually.
In addition to that, several weapons may have additional firing mode, allowing yourself to be more accurate ; the “N” key switches between all possible firing modes of your weapon.
Also, there’s a left-handed mode, for those who hates right hands. ;P
Small homework
We strongly advise you to play a bit to familiarize yourself with the gameplay and physics. It’s designed to be fast-paced, but don’t worry ; it’s very easy to get used to it 🙂
See you this Sunday!
