Heh, CS again? Small world…
Wait wait, NO, abort that headline!…. How about we see BIG for once? We’re always playing normal-size maps, but we’re missing the love to some… Memorable community maps in Counter-Strike from back in the day!
Well, it’s not really true… We’ve already played several of what Nipper made back in the day (Part 2 is in 2 weeks btw!), and we’re also playing custom maps for every of our events… But we’re missing THE crème de la crème of the Community maps that existed in Counter-Strike… The RATS maps, originally created by Chris Spain, that are still present in most gameservers, 20 years after their original creation.
Of course, Chris Spain didn’t stop from making other rats maps for the engine, as if it was his trademark. But he only made a few of them before disappearing completely from the game scene.
Compatibility issues
Did you know that the very first rats map didn’t originate from Counter-Strike, but from Half-Life? Someone anonymously ported it to CS, and it suddenly became super popular, with dozens of community maps released over the years.
Well, that information being said, we’ll use a maplist containing maps that has the *rats* theme, but we’re aware that playing too much of the same kind of gameplay might… bore a bit players. So, we’re going to take some of the maps, and we’ll change them in order to give them a “Counter-Strike: Deathmatch” treatment, with unique spawn points we’ll carefully add.
How we’ll do it is still a mystery, at least for you, dear reader. Will we put some “dm_” prefixes to some of these maps? Or will we rather make it a surprise to everyone and blend it with normal maps? The choice is ours, after all. 😛
Oh, and while you’re reading us…
Last event (CSSv34) was a bit disastrous given the attack, but to compensate from that issue, we’re giving you the chance to tell us what you’d like to play for the Community Event #31 (the 29th of September).
Full details on that story below, along with how we fixed it, and where you can tell us what you want to play!
